My CVS trip the week of 5/10/09

I'm the first to admit that I'm new at this CVS game. I've been watching the ads and reading blogs over the past two weeks and have not seen any real great deals. What deals there have been included old coupons. I did finally succumb t this obsession today to get a few deals. I bought a Soft Soap body wash for $3.99 and had a $.75 mfc coupon. I had bought one last week with a $1.00 mfc coupon because it was on sale (I have a lot of Irish Spring Body wash, but not a lot of "feminine" body wash.). I also bought a Bayer Contour blood/glucose monitor which was on sale for $14.99 and I had a coupon from a month or so ago for up to $30.00 off. (Got one of these last week too, since they paid me $5.00 to buy it!) I also picked up a Schick Quattro for women razor which was on sale for $8.99 and I had a $4.00 mfc coupon. I also splurged and bought a "Real Simple" magazine which was $4.99. I had a $1.00 coupon for the magazine. Net after coupons was $12.22. Tax was $2.31 (tax is added to before coupon price). Net out of pocket was $14. 53. OK, does sound a little high, but then I received $4.00 ECB for the Soft Soap special (buy 2 get $4 in ECB), $4.00 ECB for the Schick Quattro, and $5.00 ECB for the Contour blood/glucose monitor. Total in ECB's was $13.00. Therefore, my actual cost was $1.53. Not bad! It was the magazine that messed me up--that's what a splurge will do! If not for that, I would have made money!

I did learn something new, however. If you use mgc. coupons, the tax is added on to the before coupon price, however, if store coupons are used, they subtract tax. So when I pay with the ECB's that should take the tax off. So the tax is not the problem I thought it was going to be!

Now for CVS deals for 5/17--

I can only tell you some of the deals I'm seeing on the other blogs. I will try to get out there Sunday or Monday to see some of them for myself.

You can see the ad in Sunday's paper or go to www.Iheartcvs.com and see some of the deals there.

Right Guard Sport, Xtreme, or Dry Idea 2-4 oz. 2/$5--get $2 ECB when you buy 2.
If you got the $2 Dry Idea coupon, this is a money maker. If not, there should be a $1.00/2 coupon in the 5/17 Sunday paper. Excludes Dry Idea Clinical.

*Buy Colgate Sensitive Whitening Enamel Protect toothpaste (6 oz) or Colgate Visible White (4 oz) - $3.99, get a $2 ECB (limit 1)
$1/1 Colgate Sensitive toothpaste 5-17-09 SS
$1/1 printable for Colgate sensitive and Colgate Visible White here
(thanks to Melissa) (this link wasn't working for me!)

Buy Dial, Tone or Coast bar soap (2-3 pack) - $1.99, get a $1 ECB
$.35/1 Dial coupon in Smart Source 3/08/09

I'll let you know as more come up. Melissa has some more on her blog and you might want to check out the $5 CVS challenge on Keeping the Kingdom First blog. They come up with some good scenarios.

Another Disclaimer!!!!

Please look at the signs when you are at Walgreens. I get a lot of my info from those other couponers on the Internet. They are out there doing a lot of research, but sometimes mistakes are made. In looking at the Thermacare deal, it looks like the RRs apply to a Thermacare and Advil purchase. This is a big difference! Sorry if there was any confusion.

Quick Couponing 101

Just to give some clarification to the info I'm offering--

RR--register rewards--these are given on specific items throughout the month at Walgreens. They are considered manufacturer's coupons. You can use them like cash on your next visit with certain criteria. 1. Your purchase amount must equal or exceed the amount of your RRs. 2. You must purchase 1 item per RR coupon. i.e. if you have a RR for $1 and another for $5, your total purchases must equal or exceed $6 plus you must purchase at least 2 items. The other thing to remember is that if you have a RR for $1 for Bayer aspirin and a RR for $1 for Vitamin water and you want to purchase another Bayer aspirin to get another RR, you may use the $1 RR from the Vitamin water to pay for the Bayer aspirin and you will get the new RR from the aspirin, but if you use the Bayer $1 RR to purchase the Bayer aspirin, it will recognize it and not kick out another RR. You want to alternate your purchases. Another thing to keep in mind is that RRs usually expire in 2 weeks, so you'll want to keep on top of them.

ECB--Extra Care Bucks--these are given on specific items throughout the month at CVS. These also can be used on your next purchase like cash. Once again, I believe that you must use the entire ECB amount on your coupon for the purchase as they don't give change. However, these are not manufacturer's coupons so they don't have to be attached to an item. I'm still new to CVS so I'm learning. At CVS, you earn 2% on everything you buy and every 3 months, when you use your card, ECB's from those earnings should print out on your register receipt. Don't lose those or let them expire! They are like cash! Usually they have about a month before they expire. So CVS has 2 ways to earn ECB's.

IP--when you see this, it usually means an internet printable coupon.

Q--short for coupon.

wyb--short for when you buy.

B1GO--short for Buy one, get one. Also seen as BOGO.

GC--gift card.

I'm sure there are more, but that gives you an idea. If you have questions, please ask!

Starting the Week out Right!

Well, here is the beginning of my coupon/deals blog. The new ads came out for the week of 5/3/09. I headed out to Walgreens tonight to see if I could get some things before they ran out of them (as they often do!).

My first trip to Walgreens for this week was to pick up the 12-paks of Diet A&W root beer on sale for $11.00 I got 3 12-packs and received $5.00 in RR. While there, I also picked up one of the Natural Dentist mouth rinses. I needed one more to send in for the $10.00 rebate. I messed up at CVS last week because the deal they had (which was much sweeter) ran out the end of April instead of the end of the week. I've got to pay more attention! Anyway, Walgreens had it too and the regular price at Walgreens was $7.99 (CVS reg. price was $9.99). I had my $2.00 coupon so that would bring it down to $5.99. I also snagged a Natural Dentist that had a free ND toothpaste attached as a bonus. When I got to the checkout, it rang up at $5.99 instead of $7.99. Bonus! I had RRs to cover most of the cost but needed one more item to attach a RR reward to so purchased a small purse pack of Walgreen's tissues for $.29. My out of pocket was $1.72 and I got $5.00 in RR back! Now I can send in the rebate for the Natural Dentist which will be $10.00.
